Shiatsu Review
A friend of Holistic Journey has compiled this therapy review.
"For many years I suffered with lowerback pain; a dull monotonous ache that just would not go away. It was the sort of pain I thought I could just learn to live with, but one day I came to the conclusion that life doesn't have to be like this.
Discussing my situation with a friend, they suggested that some form of complementary therapy might help and that Shiatsu could offer some sort of relief.
I finally got my chance to try Shiatsu at a 'taster' session at a local therapy centre. A half hour appointment at a reduced price seemed an ideal way to find out what it was all about.
At the Session
My treatment started with the Therapist asking what I knew about Shiatsu. I knew it was Japanese in origin, and that it may help my lower back pain, but that was about it. The extremely knowledgeable therapist gave me a brief background about how Shiatsu worked and how the session would run. She also took a brief medical history to help get an overall picture of my health.
A full Shiatsu session lasts about an hour, and the client stays fully clothed, (much to my relief!). For my session, I arrived in jeans and a t-shirt, which wasn’t the best form of clothing to wear. Throughout the session I kept thinking that I should have worn something more comfortable. The therapist agreed and suggested loose cotton clothing next time.
The session took place on a futon at floor level. It seemed to be easier for the therapist to treat me when I was in this position.
The session really began when I lay face down on the futon and let the therapist use a variety of techniques supposed to increase the Ki energy flow within my body. Apparently, by focussing on acu-pressure points, or Tsubos, on the body, the therapisist is able to start balancing the forces existing in the human body.
I felt a great feeling of relaxation whilst the therapist applied the techniques to my body and after half an hour I got up carefully trying not to undo the work the therapist had just done.
I definitely benefitted from Shiatsu even though my session was only a half an hour taster session. I listened carefully to all the advice the therapist gave me and will seriously consider returning for a series of longer sessions in the future."
