Coping With Negative Thoughts

Negative thoughts often seem to have a life all of their own. They can grow and spiral out of control in a matter of minutes, leaving us unhappy, lifeless and disempowered.

You know the feeling, you have a million and one plans and ideas and you feel excited and elated about life. Things are really going your way at last. Full steam ahead you rocket towards success and infinite happiness! Nothing will stand in your way this time!

Then, SMACK! Like being hit in the face with a brick wall, a negative thought stops you in your tracks. And you didn’t even see it coming!

You try to keep going but you get beaten back. Negative thoughts hit you from every direction. Exhausted and deflated you retreat. And then convince yourself that you could never have achieved what you wanted; in fact you were a fool to even try. What were you thinking!

So, how can we try to understand and even appreciate our negative thoughts? And how can we keep them and their effect on us to a minimum?

Treat your negative voice like an over-protective best friend and remember;

1. Your negative voice is scared.

2. Your negative voice is trying to protect you.

3. Your negative voice will shout louder and louder until it is heard!

When your negative voice speaks to you, make sure you speak back!

1. Say ‘I can hear you!’

2. Say ‘It’s ok to be scared’.

3. Say ‘Thank you for trying to protect me’.

Keep your negative voice under control. Don’t let it breed!

1. When you get a negative thought, write it down or share it with a positive friend.

2. Keep it in the present. Don’t let it go wandering off down memory lane, unless of course you want to re-visit a past success.

3. Create a positive voice that is louder, brighter and stronger!
